The $300 first
prize was won by Community Bank's entry. However, Karen Chadwick of
Community Bank was quick to explain the group included High Country
Customizing and Outback Contractors. Their trailer was loaned by friends,
and other folks granted use of their shop to decorate and assemble the
float. Karen says they had great fun, and are looking forward to spending
the prize money to make improvements for next year's entry.
It was the same
story all the way down the line of 23 'units'. Laughter and singing
could be heard over the hum of generators and chattering teeth. Great
sportsmanship and ingenuity was displayed as one group helped another
repair wind damage, or electrical glitches.
Head Start won
second place for their float assembled by families, teachers, and friends.
Third place went to 'Eva Breshears U.S.A. Christmas' depicting Betsy
Ross, Statue of Liberty, and Uncle Sam.
Contestants were
at their best with singing, waving, and frozen-in-place smiles as they
past the judges at Corner Market, while spectators helped themselves
to hot drinks and cookies compliments of Bill and Deb at Corner Market.
Thanks!
As the parade ended
the Stampede Hall filled. Bowls of cheese topped chili, steaming hot
cups of coffee, and lively conversation were enjoyed by folks as they
waited the announcement of winners. A plaque was awarded Mike Rutherford
in appreciation for the time and effort he has donated for many years
as Elgin's Lamplighter. Mike puts up and takes down the Christmas decorations
on Elgin street poles every year.
Terry and Joan
Shepherd can relax after all their efforts to pull the parade together,
and Elgin can be proud of the patriotic community spirit shared with
folks from all over Union County.
